Patek Philippe Honorary President Philippe Stern passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, at the age of 88. Under his exceptional leadership, this Geneva-based family watchmaker successfully transformed from a traditional, smaller-scale shop with scattered workshops into the undisputed benchmark of the global haute horlogerie industry, maintaining this supreme status to this day. Undoubtedly, Philippe Stern was the crucial standard-bearer who led Patek Philippe into its modern era of brilliance. As the third-generation leader of the Stern family, he was also one of the most influential business leaders in the contemporary watchmaking world. Since 2009, the presidential baton has been officially passed to the fourth-generation helmsman, Thierry Stern. The differing styles, strategies, and evolutionary paths of this father-and-son duo, steering the brand across entirely different eras, are exceptionally fascinating.

Starting from the Ground Up

Looking back at Philippe Stern’s trajectory, it is easy to see that his passion for Patek Philippe was ingrained in his bones. Born in Geneva in 1938, he grew up immersed in the watchmaking industry. His grandfather Charles Stern and great-uncle Jean Stern officially acquired Patek Philippe in 1932; his father, Henri Stern, joined the brand’s management in 1935. Nurtured by this profound family atmosphere, Philippe Stern did not settle comfortably into the role of an heir. Instead, he started from the ground up, gaining an in-depth understanding of market dynamics and every facet of watchmaking craftsmanship.

After earning degrees in economics and business, he worked at the US distributor, Henri Stern Watch Agency, from 1963 to 1966. Upon returning to Geneva, he continued to work across various departments within the family business, gradually mastering the brand’s complete operational picture. Relying on his sharp business intuition and deep reverence for traditional craftsmanship, he steadily built his prestige within the company, preparing himself to officially take over the watchmaking empire. By the 1970s, he began co-managing the company with his father, the then-President, further elevating the brand’s market exposure.

Navigating the "Quartz Crisis"

Throughout Philippe Stern’s long and illustrious career, his most celebrated achievement is safely guiding the brand through the “Quartz Crisis” that nearly destroyed the Swiss watchmaking industry. In 1977, Philippe Stern was officially appointed General Manager of Patek Philippe. It was a critical moment when quartz watches were aggressively dominating the market, leaving traditional mechanical watches facing an existential threat. Facing this crisis, he went against the grain, firmly anchoring the brand’s focus on mechanical watchmaking. He strongly believed that mechanical watches possessed a unique value that quartz could never replace, and that even in a shrinking market, the demand would persist. His counterattack had actually quietly begun in 1976. That year, he was personally involved in pushing forward the Nautilus collection, designed by the legendary Gérald Genta. This luxury sports watch, crafted from stainless steel with bold dimensions and a hefty price tag, was not initially popular and even faced heavy skepticism. However, Philippe Stern believed in the rise of luxury casual lifestyles and persistently promoted it against all odds. It was this vision and perseverance that eventually nurtured the Nautilus into today’s highly elusive king of sports watches. In the history of the Nautilus, Philippe Stern is undeniably one of the most important figures behind the scenes.

Beyond expanding into sports watches, Philippe Stern was also the core driving force behind the renaissance of modern grand complication timepieces. He knew that to defeat quartz watches, mechanical craftsmanship had to be pushed to an unrivaled artistic zenith. In 1989, to celebrate the brand’s 150th anniversary, Patek Philippe unveiled the astounding Calibre 89 pocket watch. This monumental masterpiece, boasting 33 complications, not only redefined the limits of watchmaking but also announced to the world the powerful return of pure Swiss mechanical horology.

Later, in 1996, he once again led the industry by launching the world’s first annual calendar wristwatch, the Ref. 5035, perfectly bridging the market gap between standard calendars and perpetual calendars. That same year, under his direction, the brand introduced one of the most iconic advertising slogans of the 1990s: “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.” This phrase not only profoundly connected the brand’s value with family heritage but also became a timeless masterpiece in watch marketing history.

Vertically Integrated Manufacture

In 1993, Philippe Stern was officially promoted to President, becoming the third-generation leader of the Stern family. At that time, Patek Philippe’s workshops were scattered across more than a dozen locations in Geneva, which was highly detrimental to production efficiency and quality control. To resolve this, he resolved to fully vertically integrate the production line. In 1996, at great expense, he consolidated all scattered workshops into a new, state-of-the-art headquarters in Plan-les-Ouates, on the outskirts of Geneva. This forward-looking decision not only allowed the brand to gain complete control over every stage—from R&D and component manufacturing to final assembly—but also secured Patek Philippe’s absolute independence for the future. This site remains the brand’s global headquarters today.

Establishing the Watch Museum

In addition to brand development, Philippe Stern placed immense importance on the continuation of traditional crafts. In 2001, pouring his heart into the project, he founded the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. This museum not only houses the brand’s legendary creations since 1839 but also gathers an extensive collection of antique European timepieces dating back to the 16th century. For him, it was not merely an exhibition hall to display the brand’s prowess, but one of the world’s most important horological cultural centers, fully demonstrating his profound respect for the art of watchmaking.

Creating the In-House Seal

In 2009, Philippe Stern executed his final major decision as President by co-launching the brand’s exclusive ultimate quality standard with his son, Thierry Stern—the Patek Philippe Seal. This officially replaced the Geneva Seal, which the brand had highly relied on in the past. This announcement signaled that the brand’s standards had surpassed industry norms and formed its own system. That same year, he officially handed the presidency over to Thierry Stern, transitioning into the role of Honorary President. Thereafter, he continued to quietly oversee the family business’s growth while fully devoting himself to museum affairs.

The Fourth-Generation Helmsman, Thierry Stern Takes Over

Since 2009, Thierry Stern has officially taken the helm as the fourth-generation leader of Patek Philippe. Compared to his father Philippe’s era—characterized by an extremely restrained, classical, and strict guardian image—Thierry’s style is noticeably more forward-looking, market-sensitive, and bold. He faced a brand new era dominated by the internet, highly developed social media, and the rapid rise of a newly wealthy demographic. While inheriting his father’s insistence on ultimate quality, Thierry Stern showed a strong willingness to communicate with the new generation. Not only does he frequently articulate the brand’s philosophy in public, but he has also made bold strokes in product design, bringing unprecedented evolution to this century-old fortress.

Injecting Youthful Vitality

Injecting youthful vitality into the brand is one of the most prominent changes since Thierry Stern took office. No longer confined to traditional silver-white or sober dark tones, he boldly introduced highly visual, youthful dials in salmon, olive green, bright blue, and even vibrant purple. On many complicated timepieces, he replaced the formal alligator leather with calfskin featuring contrast stitching or water-resistant composite straps. These changes have not only made highly elevated complicated watches more suitable for daily and casual wear, but they have also successfully attracted a wave of younger collectors, adding a modern, contemporary edge to the brand’s inherent elegance.

Defending Complications

While injecting youthful vitality, Thierry Stern has never slacked in expanding the realm of complications. In 2014, coinciding with the brand’s 175th anniversary, Thierry Stern personally hosted the launch of the most complicated wristwatch in the brand’s history—the Grandmaster Chime Ref. 5175, featuring 20 complications, including a patented Grande Sonnerie and date repeater. This model later evolved into the regular production Ref. 6300. It is worth noting that acquiring this apex timepiece is not just a matter of wealth; buyers must be personally vetted and approved by Thierry Stern himself to ensure they are true, passionate watch collectors. This strict insistence fully proves Thierry’s determination to defend Patek Philippe’s title as the master of complications.

Ending the 5711 Myth

However, the moment Thierry Stern demonstrated his most resolute leadership was his decision to end a myth—directly announcing the discontinuation of the Nautilus Ref. 5711 in 2021. At the peak of the stainless steel sports watch frenzy, the 5711’s premium on the secondary market had spiraled into intense speculation. Facing this massive cash cow, Thierry Stern instead saw a potentially fatal crisis. He knew deeply that the soul of Patek Philippe lies in complex mechanics and elegant dress watches; the brand could never allow itself to be reduced to a brand that only survives on one steel watch. Thus, he decisively discontinued the 5711. This highly impactful decision not only effectively cooled blind market speculation but also showcased his extraordinary courage in protecting the brand’s long-term value.

Proving Innovative Ambition

Launching the entirely new Cubitus collection in 2024 (From ARISTO)

Stepping into 2024, Thierry Stern once again proved his innovative ambition to the world by launching the brand’s first entirely new standard collection in a quarter of a century—Cubitus. It had been nearly thirty years since the last new collections were released (the Aquanaut in 1997 and the Twenty~4 in 1999). Adopting a highly challenging square profile with rounded corners, and equipped with a large date, day, and instantaneous moon phase complication, Cubitus perfectly blends casual sportiness with modern geometric aesthetics. This not only filled the brand’s gap in the square watch market but also signified that Thierry Stern, having built upon his father’s solid empire, has finally stamped the design emblem of his own era deeply into the brand’s long history.
